While mechanical tasks have always been handled by a separate department, I have been primarily responsible for the design, building, and commissioning of automation and controls. Currently, I am seeking a more stable career opportunity.

CNC Works

Originally employed as a Automation developer I created a modular CNC User interface on top of Linuxcnc. All of these machines were commissioned on site by myself, and are still in use today.

2020 - Melvin

Created the user interface in PyQt5
Created control logic for Screw guns
Integrated LinuxCNC with EtherCAT
Designed an interactive conversational logic editor

2021 - SHA Vial Analyzer

Incorporated machine vision to locate vials for a pick and place testing apparatus

2022 - The Charles

Expanded the user interface to include custom widgets
Created Custom Dynamic Kinematics for a 14 axis mill
Designed Finite State Machine for automatic tool changing

2023 - Marilyn

Matured UI is now in use by Artists - New Operators who are not used to machine control
Retro fitted CNC controller

2024 - Frog Lineup

UI hits the masses
Mass produced product line with modular interface
Designed procedures for customer based commissioning.

The Edge Cases.

Honestly who trusted a software developer to start making physical things? And Medical?? From medical devices to shop tools to process operations. I've been getting into different areas.

2020 - EUV-SK1 Emergency Use Ventilator

Designed the UI/UX Conforming to IEC 60601-1
Including firmware and button interaction
Certified by Intertek, Health Canada and mass produced

2022 - Chicken Nebulizer

Designed a control system for Pressure, Temperature, Humidity to dose chickens with vaccines
UI with ESP32 for operators to grab operating data and history via Smart phone

2023 - Negative Pressure Ventilator

Redesigned the control system for the EUV-SK1 to run in reverse to pull vacuum on a lung sample
This allows for transporting lungs, surgery outside of a body, or whatever scientists do

2021 - Self Levelling Legs

Over Engineered Saw Horses
Designed all Circuitry and Firmware
Included a mesh wifi network for remote control, leg to leg

2023 - Rock Thrower

Curling Research, consistent rock thrower with accuracy within 0.1m/s
Designed a PyQt5 interface, ported the Teknics SDK Foundation into Python

2022 - Dryair

Redesigned a PCB that relied on tribal knowledge of which way to install diodes and LEDS

2024 - Anodizing Control Room Update

After a Compact Flash program was lost, retrofitted a room with manual PID controls and physical buttons

Irene Stud Rolling

I recieved a text at 8pm on a Tuesday night. "Hey can you go to site and install a machine?". Never touched the design before, never seen CodeSys. Over the period of a week, we made the machine useable. Over the period of a year I redesigned the machine from the Electrical to PLC to HMI.

Electrical

Changed all motors to Bosch MI Drives to add Absolute Encoders and simplify assembly
Restructured power systems to reduce to a single cabinet
Use IO on bosch drives for sensors to reduce cabling costs
Assembly time reduced from 3 months to 1 week

PLC

Enforce Code Cohesion to improve maintainability
Redesign trajectory planning to allow for a buffer system reducing memory by 8mb
Allow for custom configuration via configuration file to allow non programmers to change machine setups
Reduced commissioning time from 3 days to 1 day

HMI

Transform HMI into checklist for machine start up - Reducing errors and improve training
Useability - All normal operations are within 2 clicks
